Pumpkin Time

Well, yes indeed, we went to the pumpkin patch this morning! Bought 9 of the jolly orange globes of autumn and they are happily placed at the entrances to our home. I know nine pumpkins may seem a little extreme. But each year, the day after Thanksgiving, Bob and I have our annual pumpkin roll. We take the pumpkins to the side yard, where the incline is the steepest, and see whose pumpkin rolls the farthest down to the lake. Let me tell you, these can take off and careen down the little lake path at a pretty nice clip. So usually, I buy 3 or 4 pumpkins, but last year, for some reason, I had picked up nine at the patch. And we had a house full for Thanksgiving, 8 of our kiddos. Now, these are grown ups, ages 18 to 30ish, and when we told them about the pumpkin roll, you would have thought it was the greatest idea ever. They rolled those pumpkins down the road, chased after them like puppies into the woods, kept rolling them until every one reached the water. Our cove was filled with bobbing orange pumpkins! It was hilarious. Now, apparently it has become a highlight of the holiday – a new Thanksgiving tradition!
I don’t know yet who is planning on Thanksgiving at the lake this year, but I will guarantee that Thanksgiving evening, you will need to keep an eye out for rolling pumpkins on our road!

  1. Hi. Good idea! I think I’ll add a version to our celebration this year… but I have no hill so we’ll have to improvise! I picked up one little pumpkin (so far) to decorate our doorstep. Jane
