First Flowers on the Ridge

 First Flowers on the Ridge

The newly thawed earth soft enough to turn,
warm enough now for funerals.
Graves dug to bury
the winter’s dead.

The old timers say
that’s how it got its name-
the graves first flowers,
spare light white,
on still bare limbs,
decorating the cemetery.

Serviceberry is in bloom on the ridge.
