It’s hard to explain how really bad it was when we walked through – well, over – the door into the house for the first time. It was dirty, I mean really, really, really dirty. There was food in the refrigerator and freezer. With no electricity, you can imagine that smell. The garbage was piled up in the house – beer cans, liquor bottles, food containers, and most disturbing of all, dirty diapers. Nasty paneling on the walls, what used to be carpet on the floors, everything was just absolutely disgusting. When we finally climbed the steep stairs, there was a mattress on the floor, and at that, I headed very quickly down the stairs and outside. I didn’t want to see anymore!
Bob appeared a few minutes later with that look on his face.
I could feel the tears start to well up.
He said, ” You know, we could buy this – it would be great! We’ll fix it up. It won’t take long – it will be perfect – you’ll love it!”
And, at that, I started crying.
Funny how I remember that day as clearly as if it were yesterday, not almost 20 years ago. And funny how this house changed me and became one of the loves of my life.
